AP
고등학교 재학 중에 AP(Advanced Placement) 과목을 수강함으로써 대학 전공 기초 과정을 미리 학습하고 또한 1년 한차례 있는 시험을 응시하여 목표 대학 진학에 도움을 받을 수 있다. College Board는 매년 AP 시험을 실시하여 AP과정을 학습한 학생들의 실력을 평가하고 있다. 국내 시험은 매년 5월 첫째 주와 둘째 주에 시행되며, 시험의 난이도는 대학교 1,2학년 수준이다. 5점 만점으로 평가되는 이 AP 시험에서 3점 이상을 받으면 해당 과목의 대학교 학점을 미리 취득할 수 있게 되고 고득점을 받는 학생들은 명문대 진학에 많은 도움이 된다.
12학년 가을에는 이미 대부분의 대학 지원이 마감되는 시점이므로 늦어도 11학년 5월에는 AP 시험을 응시해야 한다. 학교에서 AP 과목을 수강하지 않더라도 시험 응시에는 제한이 없다.
